1. Unbox & verify
What to check
Open the package and confirm the authenticity seal, included accessories, and the model (Ledger Nano S Plus, Ledger Nano X, etc.). If you see tampering, contact Ledger support immediately.
Quick tip
Only buy Ledger devices from authorised retailers or directly from the Ledger website to avoid tampered devices.
2. Install Ledger Live
Download and install
Ledger Live is the official desktop and mobile app to manage accounts, send/receive crypto, and install apps on your device. Always download Ledger Live from the official site to avoid malicious copies.

Ledger Live supports Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. Use the official compatibility guide if you have questions about device and OS support.
3. Initialize your device
Create a PIN & seed
Choose a PIN and write down your 24‑word recovery phrase exactly as displayed. Ledger devices never ask for your recovery phrase online — never share it. Store it offline, ideally in a secure metal backup.
Best practice
Never enter your recovery phrase into a computer or phone; use only the physical device when recovering.
4. Add accounts & apps
Install crypto apps
Use Ledger Live to install apps (Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, etc.) on your device, then create accounts to manage those assets. Keep apps updated via Ledger Live to maintain compatibility and security.
5. Everyday security
Sending and receiving funds
Always verify transaction details on the device screen before approving. If values, addresses, or destinations look wrong, cancel and investigate.
Phishing & scams
Watch for fake support domains, social media impersonations, and malicious links. Ledger will never ask for your full recovery phrase via chat or email.
6. Backup & recovery
Recovery options
Primary recovery is your 24‑word phrase. For extra resilience, consider splitting backups (BIP39 Shamir approaches or multiple metal backups) but understand tradeoffs in complexity.
7. Troubleshooting
If Ledger Live can't connect, check USB/ Bluetooth connections, cable quality, and OS permissions. Reboot both the device and the computer if necessary.
8. Advanced
Explore developer docs, integrations with wallets (e.g., MetaMask), and how to use Passphrase (advanced users only) to create hidden accounts.
9. Recommended workflow
